Wed, 29 November 2006 Telephony is inherently a consumer product. Although it is purchased by IT Administration, the ultimate arbiter of how a product is used and successful is how the telephony user gains from the use. This week we cover product design. Don Norman used to be known as a critic of unusable things but now, he says, he has changed. He has transformed himself into an advocate for pleasurable, enjoyable products. Beauty is good, says Norman. Successful products should a pleasure to use, and convey a positive sense of self, of accomplishment, and pride of ownership. In this keynote address, Norman shares work from his latest book, Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday Things. This weeks guests include Peter Cochrane from IT Conversations and Guy Kawasaki from Berkeley Groks. Also we look back at how the phone was used back in 1950 from Archive, called "Speeding Speech" In this keynote address from the O'Reilly Emerging Telephony Conference, Peter Cochrane, the highly esteemed and engaging techno-futurist, delivers a fascinating analysis of change in our increasingly smart, networked world. He points out that technology can sometimes offer solutions more quickly than people and organizations are able or willing to adopt, until they have no choice. Peter is author of Uncommon Sense: Out of the Box Thinking for An In the Box World. "Peter Cochrane is one of our most far-sighted visionaries, and brings brilliant clarity and focus to our understanding of ourselves and our technologies, and of how profoundly each is transforming the other." -Douglas Adams, Author, The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy In Uncommon Sense, Peter Cochrane's follow up to the radical 108 Tips for Time Traveler, Peter explains how very simple analysis allows the prediction of such debacles as the 3G auction and the subsequent collapse of an industry, whilst simple-minded thinking is dangerous in the context of a world that is predominantly chaotic and out of control. People balked when Peter suggested a wholesale move to eWorking, the rise of email and text messaging, and the dotcom regime mirroring the boom and bust cycle of the industrial revolution. His predictions of the use and growth of mobile devices and communication, or use of chip implants for humans to replace ID cards, passports, and medical records, or iris scanners and fingerprint readers - were all seen as unlikely. Today they are a reality. Macintosh Evangelist Guy Kawasaki talks about his Garage Technology Ventures and what companies they are helping to grow. He talks about what it takes to be an entrepreneur with some sage advice. You can read all about Guy here. Guys blog is http://blog.guykawasaki.com/ Todays music is from Amy Fox called "Do it Again". This weeks episode focuses on VoIP Security with a report from the BlackHat Conference and then a speech given by PhoneGnome's CEO David Beckemeyer. He talks about VoIP 2.0. Dan York and Johnathan Zar from BlueboxPodcast interview Dave Endler and Mark Collier about their Black Hat talk and the VoIP security tools they released last week. This is from last weeks Black Hat Conference held at Caesars Palace Las Vegas, Nevada. The current voice over IP landscape resembles the early days of the internet, according to PhoneGnome's David Beckemeyer. Consumers are spoiled for choice, but the choices leave a lot to be desired, as most service provider are walled gardens locking users in to their services while limiting options and innovation. Beckemeyer puts forth a call to arms for voice over IP providers and consumers alike to imagine what VoIP 2.0 could be like.
